The Sundarbans is a large forest of mangrove trees in Bangladesh. It protects our country in many ways. The strong roots of the mangrove trees save the land from the big waves. The roots keep our lands safe from coastal erosion.
The Sundarbans is in the southwestern part of Bangladesh. It is located in Khulna, Satkhira and Bagerhat districts. It was declared a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1997.
The Sundarbans provides a large number of wildlife. The Royal Bengal Tiger, spotted deer, saltwater-crocodile, Irrawaddy dolphins and various types of beautiful birds are the main attractions of this forest. People visit here from home and abroad to enjoy the natural beauties and the wildlife. The Sundarbans helps us in many ways. It guards our land from tsunamis, cyclones, and tidal waves. The Sundarbans is a habitat for many endangered animals. It is also a good source of palm leaves, wood and honey. Local people collect these resources for their livelihood. To keep our country safe from natural disasters, we should protect the Sundarbans.

সুন্দরবন বাংলাদেশের ম্যানগ্রোভ গাছের একটি বিশাল বন। এটি নানাভাবে আমাদের দেশকে রক্ষা করে। ম্যানগ্রোভ গাছের মজবুত শিকড় বড় ঢেউ থেকে ভূমিকে বাঁচায়। শিকড়গুলো আমাদের জমিকে উপকূলীয় ক্ষয় থেকে নিরাপদ রাখে।
সুন্দরবন বাংলাদেশের দক্ষিণ-পশ্চিম অংশে অবস্থিত। এটি খুলনা, সাতক্ষীরা ও বাগেরহাট জেলায় বিস্তৃত। ১৯৯৭ সালে জাতিসংঘের শিক্ষা, বিজ্ঞান ও সংস্কৃতি বিষয়ক সংস্থা (ইউনেস্কো) একে বিশ্ব ঐতিহ্য হিসেবে ঘোষণা করে।
সুন্দরবন বিপুল বন্যপ্রাণীর আবাস জোগায়। রয়েল বেঙ্গল টাইগার, চিত্রা হরিণ, লবণপানির কুমির, ইরাবতী ডলফিন ও নানা জাতের সুন্দর পাখি এই বনের প্রধান আকর্ষণ। দেশ-বিদেশ থেকে মানুষ প্রাকৃতিক সৌন্দর্য ও বন্যপ্রাণী উপভোগ করতে এখানে আসে। সুন্দরবন নানাভাবে আমাদের সাহায্য করে। এটি সুনামি, ঘূর্ণিঝড় ও জলোচ্ছ্বাস থেকে আমাদের ভূমিকে পাহারা দেয়। সুন্দরবন বহু বিপন্ন প্রাণীর আবাসস্থল। এটি গোলপাতা, কাঠ ও মধুরও ভালো উৎস। স্থানীয় মানুষ জীবিকার জন্য এসব সম্পদ সংগ্রহ করে। প্রাকৃতিক দুর্যোগ থেকে দেশকে নিরাপদ রাখতে আমাদের সুন্দরবন রক্ষা করা উচিত।
