Text
Begum Rokeya was a great Bengali writer, educator and social worker. She is known as a pioneer of women's rights in Bangladesh and India. Rokeya believed that education is the first condition of women's freedom. So she set up the first school for Muslim girls in Kolkata. She started the school with only five students. She went from house to house to talk to the parents and asked them to send their girls to school. She ran the school even though many people criticised her.
Rokeya was born in 1880 in an aristocratic family in the village of Pairaband, Rangpur. Her father was Zahiruddin Muhammad Abu Ali Saber. Her eldest brother Ibrahim Saber and her second brother Khalilur Rahman had a great influence on her life. Ibrahim taught her English and Bengali at home.
In 1916 she founded the Muslim Women's Association. It worked for the education and employment of women. She also founded the Anjuman-e-Khawateen-e-Islam, which held debates and conferences about the position of women. Rokeya Day is observed in Bangladesh on 9 December every year to remember her work for women's rights and education.
