There was a small town called Hamelin. Once a lot of rats suddenly came to the town. The rats were noisy and fierce and ate up whatever food they could find. Soon the people became worried as there was very little food left.
The Mayor of the town said that there would be a big reward for anyone who could get the town rid of the rats. But no one could stop the rats. Then one day a strange man came to the town. He said, "I am the Pied Piper. I can get the town rid of the rats." The Mayor said, "If you can do it, the reward is yours!"
The Pied Piper started playing on his pipe. At once all the rats came running out to follow him. They followed him to the river. The rats were all drowned.
The Pied Piper went to collect his reward. But the Mayor would not pay him, saying, "The rats have gone. You can go too." The Pied Piper said angrily, "You will be sorry for this." He started playing his pipe again. All the children came running out to listen. They laughed and sang and danced as they followed him out of the town. Soon the Pied Piper reached a mountain, and the children followed him right into a cave. The townsfolk waited for their children to return, but sadly they were never seen again.

হ্যামেলিন নামে একটি ছোট শহর ছিল। একদিন হঠাৎ শহরে অনেক ইঁদুর এলো। ইঁদুরগুলো শোরগোল করত আর ভয়ানক ছিল; যা খাবার পেত সবই খেয়ে ফেলত। শীঘ্রই লোকজন চিন্তিত হয়ে পড়ল, কারণ খাবার প্রায় ফুরিয়ে এলো।
শহরের মেয়র ঘোষণা করলেন, যে শহরটিকে ইঁদুরমুক্ত করতে পারবে তার জন্য বিশাল পুরস্কার আছে। কিন্তু কেউ ইঁদুর থামাতে পারল না। এরপর একদিন এক অদ্ভুত লোক শহরে এলো। সে বলল, "আমি বাঁশিওয়ালা। আমি শহরটিকে ইঁদুরমুক্ত করতে পারব।" মেয়র বললেন, "যদি পারো, পুরস্কার তোমার!"
বাঁশিওয়ালা তার বাঁশি বাজাতে শুরু করল। সঙ্গে সঙ্গে সব ইঁদুর দৌড়ে বেরিয়ে এসে তার পিছু নিল। তারা তাকে অনুসরণ করে নদী পর্যন্ত গেল। সব ইঁদুর ডুবে মরল।
বাঁশিওয়ালা পুরস্কার নিতে গেল। কিন্তু মেয়র পুরস্কার দিলেন না, বললেন, "ইঁদুর তো চলে গেছে। তুমিও যেতে পারো।" বাঁশিওয়ালা রেগে বলল, "এর জন্য আপনি পস্তাবেন।" সে আবার বাঁশি বাজাতে শুরু করল। সব শিশু শুনতে দৌড়ে বেরিয়ে এলো। তারা হেসে, গেয়ে ও নেচে তাকে অনুসরণ করে শহরের বাইরে চলে গেল। শীঘ্রই বাঁশিওয়ালা একটি পর্বতে পৌঁছাল, আর শিশুরা তাকে অনুসরণ করে একটি গুহায় ঢুকে পড়ল। শহরবাসী তাদের সন্তানদের ফেরার অপেক্ষায় রইল, কিন্তু দুঃখের বিষয় তাদের আর কোনোদিন দেখা যায়নি।
