There lived a woodcutter in a village. One day he was cutting wood near a river. Suddenly his axe fell into the river. The river was very deep. The woodcutter became very sad because the axe was his only means of income. So he began to cry.
Then a wonderful thing happened. A beautiful fairy appeared there. She asked the woodcutter in a sweet voice, "Why are you crying?" The man said, "My axe has fallen into the river. I don't have any other axe. So I can't cut trees. My family has to starve." The fairy said, "Don't be upset. I will help you."
Then the fairy dived into the river and returned with an axe. It was made of gold. She asked the man if it was his axe. The man saw the axe and said, "No, it's not my axe." The fairy again went into the river and came back with another axe. It was made of silver. "Is it your lost axe?" asked the fairy. The woodcutter said, "No, it's not my axe. My axe is made of iron." So the fairy dived for the third time and returned with the actual axe of the woodcutter. This time the woodcutter said happily that it was his axe. The fairy became very pleased at the honesty of the man. So she gave all the three axes to him. The woodcutter became rich and began to live happily.

এক গ্রামে এক কাঠুরে বাস করত। একদিন সে নদীর পাশে কাঠ কাটছিল। হঠাৎ তার কুড়ালটি নদীতে পড়ে গেল। নদীটি ছিল খুব গভীর। কাঠুরে খুব দুঃখিত হলো, কারণ কুড়ালটিই ছিল তার আয়ের একমাত্র উপায়। তাই সে কাঁদতে শুরু করল।
তারপর একটি চমৎকার ঘটনা ঘটল। এক সুন্দরী পরী সেখানে হাজির হলো। সে মিষ্টি কণ্ঠে কাঠুরেকে জিজ্ঞেস করল, "তুমি কাঁদছ কেন?" লোকটি বলল, "আমার কুড়াল নদীতে পড়ে গেছে। আমার আর কোনো কুড়াল নেই। তাই আমি গাছ কাটতে পারছি না। আমার পরিবারকে অনাহারে থাকতে হবে।" পরী বলল, "মন খারাপ করো না। আমি তোমাকে সাহায্য করব।"
এরপর পরীটি নদীতে ডুব দিল এবং একটি কুড়াল নিয়ে ফিরে এলো। সেটি ছিল সোনার তৈরি। সে লোকটিকে জিজ্ঞেস করল এটি তার কুড়াল কি না। লোকটি কুড়ালটি দেখে বলল, "না, এটি আমার কুড়াল নয়।" পরী আবার নদীতে গেল এবং আরেকটি কুড়াল নিয়ে এলো। সেটি ছিল রুপার তৈরি। "এটি কি তোমার হারানো কুড়াল?" পরী জিজ্ঞেস করল। কাঠুরে বলল, "না, এটিও আমার কুড়াল নয়। আমার কুড়াল লোহার তৈরি।" তাই পরী তৃতীয়বার ডুব দিল এবং কাঠুরের আসল কুড়াল নিয়ে ফিরে এলো। এবার কাঠুরে আনন্দের সাথে বলল যে এটিই তার কুড়াল। পরী লোকটির সততায় খুব খুশি হলো। তাই সে তিনটি কুড়ালই তাকে দিয়ে দিল। কাঠুরে ধনী হয়ে গেল এবং সুখে বাস করতে লাগল।
